What's Your Sound — Billy Davis

Full name: Billy Davis
Based: Melbourne, Australia

When Sir Elton John mentions you on his radio show, you can safely say you’ve made it. At least, Billy Davis can! Born and raised in Melbourne, Billy Davis’ has been a transformative figure in the local hip hop scene. His music has tones of neo-soul, funk, jazz and RnB but he grew up listening to classics such as Doobie Brothers, The Bee Gees and Boney M. These artists, combined with the gospel that he grew up listening to at church, formed his musical foundations from an early age, which you can still see shine through in his eclectic, barrier-less approach to making music.

His latest single ‘I Ain’t’ premiered on Triple J just this Feb 2020. With over 8 million streams of his music and only two albums under his belt, it’s safe to say we’re going to see great things from Billy.

Describe 'you' to our audience:

My name is Billy Davis. I'm an artist, music producer and songwriter from Melbourne Australia. I love fashion and a good bass line and a shredding synth solo. I feel my music is a rebellion most of the time I hope you enjoy.

What or who has influenced your music the most?

Biggest influence would be growing up in church playing piano behind preachers for most of my life. Then Doobie Brothers, Elton John, Chick Corey, Queen, Neptune’s, Pharrel Williams, Kanye West, Anderson Paak, The Internet, PJ Morton

Tell us about that first moment you tried the Nuraphone:

Man, I just remember the whole syncing process and waiting on all these scans and stuff through the app. Then finally hearing my new sound experience was absolutely mental and I haven't heard that clear in a long time.

You’ve just released a new single and album, can you talk to us about the process of making this work?

The new single I wrote like two years ago. It features one of my biggest heroes, PJ Morton. At the time a lot of people had told me that I would only be making success if I did covers and all that business. I made this song as an act of rebellion I guess and yes here we are now. The album has been a long process a lot of stories to be told but hey here we are now. It’s almost done and I can’t wait to show y’all.

What's your favourite track to relax to?

Easy - Mac Ayres any day of the week.

'How Deep is Your Love' - PJ Morton.
