What's Your Sound — Simon Mavin (Hiatus Kaiyote)

One of the earliest backers, and first musicians to experience the Nuraphone, Simon Mavin is an authoritative voice on the latest developments in music technology. In our new series, Collide, Simon talks to nura about one of his favourite pieces — the vintage synthesizer the Roland JX-3P — which helps him create the distinctive sound of Grammy-nominated and universally loved future-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote.

Hailing from Melbourne, Hiatus Kaiyote's evocative music blurs jazz and soul and has won over a legion of eclectic fans, including The Root's drummer QuestLove, Erykah Badu and the late, legendary Prince. Formed in 2011, former Jazz student turned keyboard player, Simon Mavin, helped compose the genre-bending debut release 'Tawk Tomahawk'. Now, lending his skills to rhythm section The Putbacks and soul ensemble Laneous, Mavin adds the nuraphone to his stacked home studio.
